ABOUT ELVENKING

Elvenking is a pioneer of folk power metal. They come from Italy (town Sacile located in the middle way between Venice and the border Italy / Austria) and started playing own music in 1997. It was before the genre of folk metal emerged in contemporary form. You can imagine Gamma Ray, Halloween, HammerFall with some additional folk instruments and lyrics about paganism 😉 although Elvenking have released ten studio albums and developed its own unique style.

How to enjoy awesome music in unique places

HYBRID

Musictivity is a term defined in the urban dictionary as “an unique expression of musical creativity influenced by emotion, imagination and improvisation (…) going outside the box with music and creating something new.” https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Musictivity

My professor from Academy of Business (where I used to study Management 5 years ago) told once that contemporary leader have to think hybrid.

Disclosure: I use affiliate links and banners. When you buy something using link from this website, price stays exactly the same for you but I receive a small commission which supports Musictivity. Thanks! Full privacy policy: https://musictivity.org/privacy-policy/

Over the hills and far away somebody else told that everything in music was already created and there is nothing else to discover. Dumb joke! After that the world got the album “Theli” from Swedish band Therion. It was unprecedented because nobody else was brave enough to mix extreme metal with classical music before Christofer Johnsson made it in 1996. Many others tried the same later and here you go – entire new genre of metal music flourished in XXI century!

On the contrary, many bands wished to categorize themselves as a progressive metal actually duplicate each other. More experienced metal maniacs complain nowadays that all newest metal bands sound not distinguishable. Some of these new bands try to get out of the box but at the same time they are interested in sailing towards only one course, both as musicians and as a listeners. It’s a good thing. Music become listenable. But not much original.

One dimensional attitude is a genuine core of this problem.

You may say: Motorhead played one dimensional, Testament played one dimensional, The Rolling Stones played one dimensional, Iron Maiden played one dimensional and even Rush played one dimensional.

We don’t have any problem to classify these bands to one specific category.

But all of them had strong hybrid inspirations. Each of these old rock legends developed one dimensional style based on improvisations about few other music styles like:

– blues,

– rock’n’roll,

– heavy metal,

– jazz,

– folk,

– punk.

It makes a huge difference!

NO RISK NO FUN

Writing not only songs, lyrics but even blog articles like this one which you read right now, is an act of creativity influenced by emotion and imagination. I take a risk and try to construct hybrid posts about my two hobbies: traveling and music. It requires courage, especially that I turn upside down the concerts review process: other bloggers and journalists write reports from the best concerts which have already happened, while I try to build whole long content articles around concerts which will happen in the future.

Crazy? No. Musictivity is Musictivity. Full list of all of my articles: https://musictivity.org/2019/09/18/upcoming-concerts/

If you want to stay informed about new posts published on Musictivity, please type your e-mail address in the subscription spot on the right side (PX) or below (smartphones).

Well, future events are fragile. I’ve spent all day writing about upcoming Eric Burdon concert in Nuremberg. Then Eric Burdon was attacked by his own promoter because the promoter was unhonest, didn’t want to pay bills and Eric Burdon spoke in public against this kind of practices in music industry. The tour including concert in Nuremberg was canceled. I needed to remove whole article from Musictivity blog.

Many things can go wrong when somebody try to express or experience something unique. Perhaps the most striking example is the Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne tour. They planned a spectacular tour in England and Europe in the beginning of 2019 but it was postponed due to Ozzy’s health issue. At the moment we could find info about their new European dates on their official website http://judaspriest.com/tour/ However these dates will be probably postponed as well: http://judaspriest.com/news/fullstory.asp?id=D217218C-94EF-4F1F-B94C-9D100B704795

CONSTRUCTIVE HOLIDAYS

What if you buy not only a ticket for concert but also a plane ticket? So would you like to tell me that you were going to travel abroad to see Priest and Ozzy? I call it holidays, shorter or longer but still holidays.

What if you are a member of a band which is going for international tournee? Congrats but will you visit some major big cities on the way? Why wouldn’t you use this opportunity to get insight into unique culture and history of visited places? I’m aware that you don’t have much time and perhaps you feel alone in new places but the thing is that you don’t need much time neither local friends to get solid cultural insight. It can be easy to realize and inspiring. Remember that you are able to create something new when you are under the influence of art unrelated to your specific style.

I have something interesting for you and it may be free, no hidden costs.

This is the most useful website which I know to plan itinerary each time when I am somewhere out of home. There are hundreds activities in each major city and also some interesting ones in non-major towns. I use it regularly. Prices are moderate and guides usually very knowledgeable, they know how to impress you about history and culture of their own city.

My favorite kind of tour is a biking tour where each participant get a bike for few hours and biking behind an experienced guide who shows all most prominent landmarks.

Although this one is paid, you can find a free walking tour in each major city. You don’t pay for signing, guides have proper expertise and are willing to show you all of these awesome places, explain cultural context and answer on your questions.

Such a constructive time, just two or three hours and you are acquainted with the city!

You can give a tip directly to the hand of your guide if you like this tour. I appreciate their job so I usually give 10 or 20 eur/usd/gbp/chf but it’s entirely up to you.

TOOLS

Type “free Berlin”, “free Copenhagen”, “free Paris” or any other free-something, using the following link

https://www.getyourguide.com/?partner_id=QL9T477&utm_medium=online_publisher&utm_source=poblak%40europe.com&placement=content-middle

I believe that it’s better for everybody to use this source when abroad. Regardless if it’s a business trip, holidays with whole family or you just fly for concert, you can take advantage from free walking tour. It’s not time consuming (usually three hours are perfectly enough), free, educative, fun, inspiring and memorable.

If you aren’t on a tough budget, you can consider to use this source also for:

– walking tours,

– biking tours,

– bus tours,

– boat tours,

– theme tours,

– art and museums tickets (also include skip the line option),

– theme parks tickets,

– culinary or pub crawl tours,

– architecture tours,

– history and heritage tours,

– extreme sports activities (balloon, Ferrari ride, skydiving, many others),

– family tours,

– special wheelchair accessible activities,

– booking transportation from the airport,

– many many other options to spend quality time.

The conclusion is that concert don’t need to be your only one activity when you fly somewhere. There are so many cool things to do in the world! Don’t forget to book your tour before you depart for journey. You can also bookmark this website to have it always easily accessible.

https://www.getyourguide.com/?partner_id=QL9T477&utm_medium=online_publisher&utm_source=poblak%40europe.com&placement=content-middle

Skip the line tickets to popular landmarks are worth to mention separately. Recently I was happy to make a complete Colosseum tour in Rome in just 90 minutes and I can not find any good reason why so many people waited half day in endless line just to get inside the same Colosseum. It’s not a saving at all, difference in price between standard ticket and skip the line ticket with guide is maybe 20 euro while all of this crowd waste half day of precious holidays waiting in the endless line. Maybe they just needed someone to inform them about existence of GetYourGuide? Skip the line tickets are especially useful in the most popular tourist destinations in the world, read about Paris https://musictivity.org/2019/09/01/alter-bridge-paris-09-12-2019/

On the end, I would like to suggest you some other practical tools to plan your travel. I am a frequent international traveler, I use it regularly and I can recommend it as reliable and useful. I will appreciate if you make a purchase using links displayed on Musictivity – price will stay the same for you but I would get a small commission which will help me to run this website 😉

Buy your ticket for U.D.O.’s concert in Germany or in Heerlen here http://tidd.ly/bc69562a I will appreciate small commission from Eventim. Otherwise, you can obtain the ticket from official U.D.O.’s website (you choose). Enjoy!

U.D.O. will play in two Dutch towns: Amstelveen and Heerlen. I’ve already described Heerlen in article about upcoming Jethro Tull 50 anniversary tour https://musictivity.org/2019/07/24/jethrotullinnetherlands/ Amstelveen is a residential area adjacent from south to Amsterdam, few kilometers east from Schiphol International Airport.

Although there is some art to see in Amstelveen (Cobra Museum of Modern Art) I wouldn’t call this town a cultural destination for foreign travelers. Amstelveen is a home for people who work in Schiphol or in bank / insurance / commerce corporations in Amsterdam South’s business park. Subway & tram line cross Amstelveen in the middle and you can commute directly between Amsterdam and Amstelveen with ease (alternatively you can take a car ride or biking under the trees along this line).

Japanese friend of mine told me that Amstelveen is the same for Japanese minority in the Netherlands as Dusseldorf for Japanese minority in Germany. They have own shops, own barber and even own school for children of Japanese expats – all located exactly in Amstelveen. Interesting but I have much more to share with you.

I decided to show you again that the Netherlands is not only Amsterdam but this time through presenting carefully selected videos from YouTube, weet u wel. Everything what you can see below is high quality and display places which you can reach with direct public transport from Schiphol Internetional Airport (according to 9292.nl). I give you links only to these videos which are worth it in my personal opinion.

Let’s assume that I have one week off work, found nice hotel in Schiphol and don’t want to spend more than one day in any town. In this case, this would be my itinerary:

HammerFall + Antwerp 05.02.2020

Swedish HammerFall just released new heavy metal album called “Dominion” and is going to promote this longplay all over the world. According to band, “Dominion” is fresh, energetic and epic. I would add that it also sounds like solid heavy metal ought to nowadays. In my opinion Interesting compositions which hell bent for leather and traditionally heavy guitar parties are main outstanding elements of “Dominion”.

Here you can watch an official excellent video clip “(We Make) Sweden Rock”, posted on YouTube by Napalm Records \m/ Maybe that’s only me, but I noticed slight Byff Byford’s (Saxon) influence in Joacim Cans’es manner in this song 😉 Generally don’t expect next “Legacy Of Kings”, but it’s a pure heavy fuckin’ metal with perfect proportion of melody and power.

Finnish heavy metal band with singing lady Battle Beast will perform as a support. It’s a great idea to always inquire with music of supporting bands before going for any gig, so below you can watch an official video from Nuclear Blast Records. I like this song “Black Ninja”, yeah this one is really ok. They use more keyboards on the newest album “No More Hollywood Endings” (2019).

If you live in region out of HammerFall schedule, I would recommend to take a well planned trip to the beautiful Belgium. HammerFall will perform in Antwerp (the second largest city after Bruxelles) but if you are interested in sightseeing then it’s better for you to book a hotel in Ghent instead. This region is famous for charming towns like Ghent, Brugge, Antwerp and Bruxelles. Ghent lies in the middle of them so it would be easier for you to commute. You can get from the Bruxelles International Airport BRU to Ghent with direct train in less than 90 minutes. Rage + Vienna 19.02.2020

Love it or hate it. Rage defines German power metal. They used to experiment with classic orchestra in the past but nowadays Rage is a trio \m/ Founder Peavy Wagner (vocals, bass), completed new line-up in 2015 with Greek Vassilios “Lucky” Maniatopoulos (drums) and Venezuelan Marcos Rodriguez (guitars). Their wild two studio albums “The Devil Strikes Again” (2016) and “Seasons Of The Black” (2017) represents traditional, raw power metal style with modern sound. Especially that the latter consisted of at least six old school songs from Avenger era added as a bonus tracks (previous incarnation of Rage, around 1984). Furthermore, we can expect new pure metal album called “Wings Of Rage” on the beginning of next year 2020 (probably 10.01.2020). I hope to get the best stuff since “The Missing Link” (1993)… and it’s quite possible!

We need to wait for next Rage concerts so it’s a great opportunity to listen again their best albums. Let me know in comment what is your favorite Rage longplay? I personally appreciate mostly “The Missing Link” (1993) and “Black In Mind” (1995) but “The Devil Strikes Again” (2016) and “Seasons Of The Black” (2017) are great too.

Officially confirmed Rage’s thrilling dates (according to their website):

23.02.2020 Bochum, Germany, Zeche

More concerts will be announced soon 🙂

If you live in proximity of one of mentioned venues then I recommend to go there crazy and enjoy. Otherwise you can take a trip to another city/country. I like the idea to wait for “Wings Of Rage”, listen this new album and after that watch Rage on scene.

One of the most appealing city for music trip is Vienna, capital of Austria. Rage plays traditional power metal and Vienna is a city of traditions. Right? I would argue that it’s true but my family laughs. Let me explain how is it.

I come from musical family. My grandfather was an organist in church, my grandmother was a music teacher at school, grand aunt was an orchestra conductor, cousin was a singer in choir, father was a musician in army and mother graduated classical music from University but worked only few years as a classical music critic. My childhood was soaked in classical music but also in other forms of high end arts. Albeit nobody had ever pushed me to learn playing on any instrument, my parents just decided that it’s unnecessary. I grew up with Metallica, Judas Priest and The Doors. Now I call these bands “traditional” if not “classical” haha

Vienna is famous with Viener Klassik, three composers of classical period: Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven. Yeah. I don’t really understand why these men are the most supreme representatives of Vienna but my Mom told me that other great composers from Vienna lived in other periods in music history. Alright, let’s say that we need to know names of these three “idols”. Below my pretty picture with monument of Mozart in Vienna:

Vienna is considered as a one of the most livable city in the world because people who live there appreciate other values than only money. There are plenty magnificent cultural venues and prices are really affordable. I stayed in four stars hotel in Belvedere garden for 60 euro / night. I ate the best schnitzel in my life for 26,50 euro in high end luxurious restaurant attended by celebrities from Vienna State Opera. I booked a fantastic and super informative walking tour with fixed price merely 17 euro. As you can see, perfect service for half price which you need to pay for the same quality in many other European major cities.

Rage “Seasons Of The Black” 2CD digipak now 7,99 euro

Some people claims that pastries are the best in Paris, others say that in Vienna or in Copenhagen. I tried pastries in each of these cities and Vienna wins hands down. I recommend especially Anker as a bakery which exists from 1891 and offers delicious, quite big pieces of cakes for around two euro each (you can eat on site or take away) https://www.ankerbrot.at/

Popular Ring Road (Ringstrasse) in Vienna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in theory you can take a touristic tram along this street for ten euro. I made that and I was disappointed. Waste of time. It’s much better to explore this area step by step. It looks awesome! Too good for window watching. Cultural offer on the Ring Road is so rich that you probably would love to explore some buildings from inside https://www.viennadirect.com/sights/ring.php

The Vienna City Hall is a brilliant example of architectural pearl located by Ring Rong though it was under re-construction in May 2019 (I’m not sure if it’s available to see in its full grace now) but I was able to make picture over there three years earlier. It’s my favorite building in Vienna. Friedrich Von Schmidt was a main architect of this outstanding neo gothic construction and he also made a final project of the cathedral in Cologne (thats why I love the city of Cologne in Germany).

Read more about Cologne: https://musictivity.org/2019/11/02/grand-magus/

Hofburg is an another significant structure in Vienna. There are a lot of stories to explain about this and other unique sites but it suppose to be heard in person from experienced guide. Now I can only show you my gorgeous pictures of Hofburg:

I hope that traditional power metal will inspire you to experience the most traditional cities in Europe. Rage concert in Vienna can be an amazing opportunity to do that so grab your tickets and go crazy with your new wings!
